The Free State race is run by race director Ben Holmes and the Kansas Trail Nerds running group.

This event was an impromptu race, as we decided to visit our son near Lawrence, Kansas. So you know us runners; 2 weeks out I started to look for any nearby races. I signed up for the 40 miler trail race. Disclaimer here... I've never run a race on a trail course, nor have I run anything above 31 miles. Although called "40" miler, it was actually somewhere around 43.4 miles. Two loops of 21.7 mile.

I was not worried about my training/conditioning as I had several recent long races under my belt. I just needed to continue with a couple of long run weekends to keep the conditioning going until race week. I made sure I was well rested, and getting at least 6 hours of sleep 2-3 days before race day.

As we would arrive late in the evening Friday night, I decided to not do early packet pick up. I went to bed around 1 a.m. Woke up at 4:45 a.m., and was out the door by 5:00 a.m. Stopped by a local gas station for toll and park entry fees and breakfast. Had a banana nut muffin and a Powerade drink for breakfast.

The drive to the lake was uneventful, until I entered the park. It was still pretty dark. There was still 2-3 miles to drive to the parking area when I noticed a lot of people walking on both sides of the roads. As I got closer to them I noticed the were dressed in Army fatigues and full gear (minus weapons). Looks like there was some type of competition or field exercise. I quickly turned off my headlights and drove only with my parking lights. Later I found out that it was a competition.

Ben and crew were still setting up starting line area and the bag drop area so I went off to take a nature break and warmed up by running for about 10 minutes. I went to pick of my bib and tech shirt, and was also handed a glass mug and a 40 miler sticker. Nice!! Stored my things in the vehicle and pinned my bib number on to my shorts, Since it was still cool, I decided to keep my gloves and knitted cap on and place my drop bags in their respective pickup areas. I chatted with a fellow maniac for a while and then next thing you know we're lining up for start of the race. The 100K and 40 miler both started at the same time. A little past 7:00 a.m. With the marathon and 1/2 marathon starting an hour later.

I tailed behind some speedy runners for about 2 miles then passed them as the trail allowed. During this point in the trail, almost every half mile we would hit a mile maker sign letting us know how far way we were from the end of the loop. I completed the first loop (about 21.7 miles) in 3:41:28. 8th place over all.

At the 3rd manned aid station I also consumed the usual, plus a soft taco. Since I knew that at this point (about 33 miles in) there would be 6 miles until the last manned aid station, I grabbed 3 servings of Honey Stinger energy chews from my drop bag (up until now, I did not have to consume anything out of my two drop bags).

Midway through this portion of the trail a few things had me wondering if I was hallucinating...

1. I saw a very large deer cross our path about 20 feet in front of us. It was so large that at first I thought it was a moose. I turned around to see if any runners were near by. The few that were behind me were too far back to see it, as it crested over the hill.

2. Several times I heard cheering and a PA announcer's voice through the woods. I knew it was too close to be the finish line. Later, on the way out of the park, I saw marked off bike lanes in the middle of the road. Looks like there was a cycling competition going on. This must be a very popular location for outdoor activities.

I stubbed my left "long toe" several times during the second loop. It felt swollen. There was a feeling of pain. Not bad enough to stop me from running, but it did slow me down some. I did not bother looking at until the end of the race (it was bruised, bendable, but not broken). By the time I had reached the 4th/2nd manned aid station, I knew it would be hard to complete this loop in under 4 hours, so I bumped the goal to around 5 hours. After eating an orange wedge my lips started stinging; dried lips. I applied Vaseline to them from the manned aid station (they thought of everything!!).

I ran the last 3 miles as fast as I could, passing the eventual 1st and 2nd place 60K finishers and a couple 40 mile finishers.

The hardest part of the 21 mile loop was the narrow, rocky, sometimes steep and uneven lake shoreline section. I had taken the above picture of it, but this (and other) video presents it much better:

At the manned fuel stations, I consumed 2 SCaps (chased down with either Hammer Heed, Coke or Ginger Ale), peanut butter and jelly tortillas, pringles, orange wedges, a piece of a banana, and topped off my bottles with water and Heed in each.

I had several close calls on doing "face plants"; the closest one, a three-point running stance. My momentum kept me from hitting the dirt (rocks, root, etc.). Other than stubbed toe, I came out of this race better than I have been in my marathons or 50K races. No cramps (thanks to the SCaps) or major soreness.

For it being my first trail race, the overall experience could not have been any better.
I also like the fact that Ben bought all the event photos taken by Tyson Hofsommers and Dick Ross (friendly guy, enjoyed his stories). Post race, I enjoyed the hot open air showers. This was my 3rd time using showering facilities provided by a race event. I was dreading this one, as this was an "open air" shower and the the air temperature was cooling down. I was imagining a quick jump into the shower, a quick cleanup, and racing to put on clothes in order to stay warm. But the showers were hot to the point I didn't want to leave. They were so warm that the cool air temperature was not even factor while getting dressed. It was very nice not having to drive in 9 hours worth of trail sweat and funk.
It was quiet a drive from Kennedale, but I happen to be dropping Michelle off in Sachse, TX. The group run was organized rather quickly by Libby. Her friend was in need of a long run in the roads (she had been training on treadmills) before running her first half marathon, the Dallas Rock N Roll Half. Libby, being the social running magnate that she is, attracted over 20-plus participants (via Facebook and Twitter invites) who were also looking for a local, long run.

In the 3 years that I've been running, I've never participated in a group run. I certainly enjoyed the social aspect; getting to know your fellow runners, learning new training methods, nutritional products, running gear, etc.

There was water/Gatorade stations provided by Libby, post-run recovery drinks provided by Honeymilk, and post-run ART (Active Release Techniques®) work from chiropractor, Dr. G from Spring Valley Spine and Sportscare.

I paired up with Keith, a local Allen runner. Although Keith is much faster than I, we decided to pair up and keep the pace around 8:00-8:30 minute per mile. Keith had to do another training run of 17 miles for a Run On group the next day. For me this is going to be my long run before the Bearathon next Saturday.

It was a relatively flat course. I usually warm up by mile 3, but not today. I struggled all the way through the run. Although there were some strong head winds, these were not much of a bother since we changed directions during the almost "out-and-back" course. There were several major intersections that we had to "pause" our runs and timing devices. I forgot to "un-pause" my CardioTrainer android app after pausing to cross E. Exchange Parkway, between mile 7 and 8. I did not notice it until we crossed over Greenville Ave. So I lost almost 2 miles. Luckily Keith had his Garmin. He clocked us @ around 1 hour and 20 minutes for the run.

If you're looking for local group to run with in Allen, TX, look up Libby and Keith. I believe they will have several weeks of group/training runs planned throughout the week.
May is Lupus Awareness Month. Please join the Lupus Runners (Brian Thomas, Deb Frerick, Tim C. Smith, Cruz Pitre) and the Lupus Foundation of America as we Band Together for Lupus™. Our goal is to raise funds for Lupus research and to bring awareness of this disease to a broader audience.

I know the debilitating affects of Lupus; my wife, Michelle, has lupus. I also have a first cousin, friends (including one of our Lupus Runner, Deb), and several friends with family members that have been diagnosed with this disease.

I'm continuing Brian Thomas' blog (was http://www.lupusrunner.org/) to help raise funds to fight this disease. The Lupus Runner group raises awareness and funds by participating in Lupus walks and by also running in various races throughout the year. Some of our runners' Lupus fund-raising and awareness have garnered the attention of the news media.
My wife and I started last month by getting a group together to raise money during two events. On April 17th, the Kennedale's Art in the Park 1 mile Fun Run. On April 24th, the North Texas Chapter of the Lupus Foundation of America's Walk for Lupus Now 3 mile walk. We raised $549.50 between both events. Since 2007 the Lupus Runner group have raised over $12,000 for the Lupus Foundation of America. Can you help us continue our cause?

So I awoke up Saturday morning at 4:00 am. to my cell phone's alarm clock. It was another early rise for a half marathon race. This time the race (the Bearathon), was down in Waco, TX. It starts/ends at the campus of Baylor University. The drive to Waco was uneventful. That is until around 20 miles from Waco I start seeing lightning. In total, I saw 4 lightning strikes for the rest of the drive.

As I drove through the campus I see the street gutters filled with about 3 to 4 feet wide water. There seems to be a lot of run off and the gutters are barely handling it. Luckily I found a "crossing" that did not get my feet/shoes soaked.

We were told that the race was not cancelled, to continue registering and picking up your timing chips. Another update was given. This time the race was delayed until 9:00, because of lightning strikes. Again we were told to continue as normal (registering and timing chip pick up).
We were given our final update aound 8:45. The race was cancelled due to "inclement weather". We were told to turn in our timing chips and to pick up our tech shirt and medal. It looks like the announcer misspoke about the medals. After receiving our tech shirts and no medals, some runners inquired further. They were told that there would be no medals handed out. As I and others did not hear a correction announced, I could see why this was confusing to some.

I understand the side of race management. It's not fun for them. Taking care of runners' safety is their priority. This was my first experience in which a race was cancelled due to inclement weather. I can tell you, that for my side, I was very dissapointed. After driving an hour and half, and 90 miles, the last thing I (we) wanted was for the race to be cancelled.

The rain clearing up as I drove home did not help the mood I was in. So now that I know how it feels to show up ready to run with no where to run, I hope I don't have go through this again. At least not anytime soon.
Cruzhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10779276809353626167noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6305480301478642885.post-26393400519845299942010-03-22T00:41:00.003-05:002010-03-23T01:10:35.902-05:00Running Dairy - 2010-03-15 to 2010-03-192010-03-19

I ran on Saturday's (February 27, 2010) Cowtown Half Marathon. As usual I had all my gear inventoried the night before. I had plenty of rest on Thursday night (7 hours) and Friday night (5 hours). Thankfully this race was a local one and only 15 miles away. My running gear was the same except I added a hand held 10 oz. bottle filled with Gatorade and, for fuel I brought 2 packets of strawberry CLIF Shot Bloks electrolyte chews.

The drive to downtown Fort Worth was fine. I had arrived a little before 6:00 a.m. I had planned to park in the same place as last year, in the parking garage cattie corner from the Bass Performance Hall. It's within 2-3 blocks of the starting line and other race related stations. It looked like everyone had the same idea as it took more than 20 minutes to move a quarter of a mile to the parking garage. I parked in the 5th floor. After testing out the weather and since there was more than hour before the start of the race, I decided to dress warm. So I kept my windbreaker set, my gloves and knit cap on. I brought along a bag so that I could check in my windbreaker set.

After walking around and taking some pictures, I removed my wind breaker set stored them in my bag.
About 15 minutes before race start I checked in my bag.

I took my shok blocks and a chased it down with couple of drinks of water. I stretched and warmed up by running about 5 blocks down from the starting line and back. According to my bib I was assigned to start corral B. So I started looking for it. I found it just as the singing of the National Anthem began.

After a couple of minutes, the elite runners started from their "corral". Shortly after that corral B was let loose. As usual my muscles felt sluggish for the first 2-3 miles. I took a couple of sips from hand held bottle of Gatorade past the 3rd mile. It was nice to see youngsters out cheering the runners. Past mile marker 4 there were a couple of them begging the runners for "low five" as we went by. I was more than happy to oblige them.

In the middle of the running mile number 5 I hear my cell phone's GPS software sound the audible mile marker beep. I knew that it was too soon for that. It beeped several more times in a matter of 3-4 minutes. Past mile marker 6 I took off my gloves and threw them away in trash bin as I was passing the drink station. I also push the edges of my knitted cap above the top of my ears. I had finally started to warm up and feel the perspiration on my forehead. I took some more electrolytes, followed by several sips of Gatorade. The beeping from the phone's GPS continued until mile marker 8. So tracking my mile splits went out the window for those miles.

After mile marker 9 and several more sips of drink it seemed like the run was all mostly down hill. All under 8:00 minutes per mile. I avoided the brick street surface on Camp Bowie Blvd. by running mostly on the street's gutter concrete surface. That allowed me to keep a pretty fast pace through mile 10 and 11.

Halfway into mile 12, I saw a "mini" flash mob by the park, dressed as zombies and dancing to Michael Jackson's Thriller in the park, right before the 7th street bridge over Trinity Park trails. Over the bridge I noticed the trails where I had trained the majority of the latter half of last year. This was the first time that I have seen the trails from this vantage point. I had run in the Fort Worth's Runners Club Einstein 10K, the Mote in Motion Half Marathon, the Fort Worth Marathon and the Impossible Possibilities 5k races on these trails.

I take my last sip of Gatorade as continue into mile 13. I started feeling my legs getting heavier but I cruised in a little over a 9:00 minute mile pace through the finish line. My time for the 13.1 miles was 1 hour, 45 minutes and 23 seconds. I was just 9 seconds away from my PR. I improved by 4 minutes and 4 seconds from my second half of the year (Run the Line), and 5 minutes and 19 seconds improvement off of my first half of the year (Surfside Beach).

I cooled down around the finish line. There water plenty of water and volunteers. I took several pictures of the crowd and runners.

I cheered on the first male and female marathon runners to cross the finish line. I waited for Libby to cross the finish line so that I could take her finisher pictures. It was great to hear that she PR'd in this race by over 3 minutes. Congrats Libby!!
I went to downtown Fort Worth to pick up my packet for the Cowtown Half Marathon race tomorrow. It seemed like déjàvu from last year; cold, drizzling, and gusty winds. Last year I went during rush hour. This year I went in early, around lunch time. There was a lot less people, but still a noticeable crowd, with little wait time in line.

While I was there, I also registered for the Rock 'n' Roll Dallas Half Marathon to be run in two weeks (March 14th, 2010). Registering with them at Cowtown provided me with an added benefit of an official Rock 'n' Roll Dallas Half Marathon long sleeve fleece jacket.
Morning run:

I ran an easy 2.06 miles in 16 minutes and 08 seconds at a 7:50 minute per mile pace. The weather was overcast, with humidity at 89%. The temperature was around 42 degrees.

I started the morning run in shades, as the sun was shining bright. On the way back the clouds completely covered the sun rays.
2009 - Fort Worth Cowtown 5k
This Sunday, February the 28th, marks my 1 year anniversary of running in race events. My first race was in the Fort Worth Cowtown 5k. I completed the event in a time of 26 minutes and 08 seconds, at a pace of 8:24 minutes per mile. With a wind-chill of 17 degrees, and a large crowd to "run and weave" through, it was a challenging event in more ways than one.

As I crossed the finish line I had a sense that it was over too soon. I began to think that I should have entered in a longer distance event. Looking back, I'm glad I didn't. This race proved to be a "springboard" that launched me into my first racing year. I progressively increased my mileage and event distances through out the year.

At the begining of the year I could never had imagine running in one race, let alone 18 events by the end of the year. In the last 5 months of the year I had completed 4 half marathons, and 2 full marathons.

So, how am I celebrating this occasion? I feel there is no better way than celebrating than by running in a race!! Not in the same race (5k), but in the Cowtown Half Marathon on Saturday, the 28th of February. The weather is looking great, so far, compared to last year. That alone is worth looking forward to.

My goal for this race is to set a PR (personal record) for the half marathon distance. My Current PR is 1 hour, 45 minutes and 14 seconds. That is at a pace of 8:02 minutes per mile. I have not run on this course before, but I've heard that it is a pretty fast course.

Good luck to everyone in all the events at Cowtown, and may you all set PRs!!

Today's training run results :
